![]() ![]() Unfortunately, for a product team, it feels different when the problems are driven by external factors versus customer needs. High-intensity deadlines with ever-changing requirements are the definition of product development. The solutions we knew would drive our business forward had to be paused in exchange for products that were driven by our industry, not our customers. Product teams have been on the front lines of ensuring that the solutions they’re building are helping mobile marketers meet the industry standards for privacy while juggling continually evolving requirements from Apple and Google.įor our product team, these changes meant we had to take being agile to the next level. While the Covid-19 pandemic has been challenging for businesses over the past few years, privacy changes have added to the confusion for the mobile industry. A quick litmus test I use with my team is: “If you don’t know Tati’s dog’s name, you don’t know Tati.” One best practice we’ve implemented to help foster this is having cameras on by default if you’re willing and able, as well as using the first five minutes of a meeting to “human talk.” The moment you build a human connection, you’ve built the trust needed to deliver in a remote team setting. With remote work, you can still build incredibly strong relationships with your teams. Interestingly, nearly one-third (27.2%) of product managers say “soft skills” is the most important skill for the next decade, pointing to a growing recognition of the key part this role plays in building effective teams by going beyond tactical business priorities and instead focusing on deepening internal relationships. Product teams are central to motivating others not only to do their jobs but also to get excited about new solutions. While this is still our goal, we needed to remedy how we got there. Our goal was shipping-getting from Point A to Point B. Unfortunately, the natural trend I noticed once we were fully remote was the shift to an operational-only mindset. To drive product development, you are dependent upon everyone from sales to engineering. Other key tools that have helped us excel include Framer, Figma, Contentful, Hotjar, Pendo, Zoom, Calendly and, the obvious player, Slack. This is where Loom allows us to bypass the millions of meetings on our calendars and share videos with each other to ensure we don’t only discuss ideas when in a meeting. Understanding that product teams thrive on sharing ideas, I knew that the in-person “did-you-knows” would be much more difficult with remote work.
